About this exam family

The ASA pathway asks you to use mathematics to make decisions about uncertain cash flows. Probability describes what may happen; financial mathematics puts payments on a common time basis. FAM connects those tools to insurance losses, life contingencies, premiums, and reserves. From there, candidates pursue either advanced long-term or advanced short-term actuarial mathematics. SRM, PA, and ATPA develop a second thread: choosing models, checking their fit, and explaining what their predictions mean for a business decision. This guide follows those connections through concrete calculations. As you work, pay attention to the event being modeled, the timing of each cash flow, the assumptions behind an estimate, and what would change your conclusion.
