About this exam family
The CPCU designation brings several kinds of insurance judgment together. You need to identify loss exposures, decide how to manage them, understand how insurer departments act on those decisions, and explain the financial result. You also need to read coverage and legal facts carefully: a loss may be real but fall outside a particular policy, while a sound underwriting decision may still fail if its data are weak. This guide builds those skills across the five core CPCU courses, the commercial and personal concentration alternatives, selected elective alternatives, and Ethics 311. Each planned lesson starts with a decision rule and ends with a resolved situation, so you can see how a change in facts changes the answer. United States legal examples identify the relevant jurisdiction and assumed policy wording where those details control the result.
