FAQ

Common questions about Tableau Desktop Specialist

When should I use a relationship instead of a join?

Start with a relationship when tables have different levels of detail and you want Tableau to retain each table's grain until a view calls for fields from both. Use a physical join when you need one row-level table and understand how matching, unmatched rows, and duplicate keys will affect it. For example, joining one customer row to three order rows repeats the customer value three times; summing that repeated value would overstate it.

Why does a measure change when I add a dimension to a view?

The new dimension divides the view into smaller groups, and Tableau aggregates the measure within each group. If sales of 20, 30, and 50 belong to two regions, the original total is 100. Adding Region may produce marks of 50 and 50. The source rows have not changed; the level at which Tableau displays their aggregate has.

How do a regular calculation and a quick table calculation differ?

A regular calculated field defines a value from fields and functions. A quick table calculation operates on values already present in the view and depends on its addressing and partitioning. If three displayed monthly sales values are 10, 20, and 30, a running total across Month displays 10, 30, and 60. Changing the calculation's direction or the dimensions in the view can change those results.
